"The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan called on his troops to resist any urge to avenge the death of two American soldiers killed in riots over the burning of Qurans at a U.S. base… (saying) “Now is not the time for revenge. Now is not the time for vengeance. Now is the time to look deep inside your souls, remember your mission, remember your discipline, remember who you are.”

FALLOUT FROM KORAN BURNING

"Two American officers were shot dead at close range inside Afghanistan's Interior Ministry on Saturday, a U.S. official said, as rage gripped the country for a fifth day over the burning of the Muslim holy book at a NATO base. NATO recalled all staff working at ministries in the Afghan capital Kabul following the attack..."

"The potential scope of the fallout from the burning of several copies of the Koran by American military personnel this week became chillingly clear on Thursday as a man in an Afghan Army uniform shot and killed two American soldiers, while a crowd nearby protested the desecration of the Muslim holy book... some of Mr. Karzai’s allies in Parliament... have openly encouraged people to take to the streets and attack NATO forces... The Taliban released two statements on Thursday: one urged Afghans to attack foreign troops and installations as well as Afghan forces who are defending them, and the second urged Afghan security forces to turn their guns on their NATO colleagues..."

DETAILS OF KORAN BURNING

"... a dump truck escorted by a military vehicle drove up to the landfill at Bagram Air Base. Some of the 20 or so Afghans working in the landfill section said that two uniformed American soldiers, a man and a woman, began unloading bags of books out of the back of the truck and throwing them into a pit for incineration... the soldiers attempting to burn the texts were oblivious to the significance of what they were doing. They made no attempt to hide the fires, instead appearing to be routinely carrying out their duties...

"Afghans working in the landfill section said... "we attacked them with our yellow helmets, and tried to stop them, we rushed towards them and we threw our helmets at the vehicles... saying, “‘Don’t burn our holy book, we will give it to our mullahs!’”

"... protests began hours later, as Afghan workers who had witnessed the incident emerged from the base, one or two of them carrying damaged Korans hidden in their clothes..."

BURNING OF QURANS AT U.S. BASE

"Troops on the U.S.' largest base in Afghanistan have inadvertently burned Qurans and other religious materials, triggering angry protests and fears of even larger demonstrations as news of the burning spreads. The books were mistakenly thrown out with the trash at Bagram Air Field north of Kabul and were on a burn pile... Ahmad Zaki Zahed, the chief of the provincial council, said 60 to 70 books had been recovered from the fire, including Qurans that were once used by detainees at the base. "Some were all burned. Some were half-burned."

SHEPHERD CHILDREN KILLED BY NATO AIRSTRIKE

"Eight youths, tending their flock of sheep in the snowy fields of Afghanistan, were exterminated last week by a NATO airstrike. They were in the Najrab district of Kapisa province in eastern Afghanistan. Most were reportedly between the ages of 6 and 14. They had sought shelter near a large boulder, and had built a fire to stay warm. At first, NATO officials claimed they were armed men. The Afghan government condemned the bombing and released photos of some of the victims. By Wednesday, NATO offered, in a press release, “deep regret to the families and loved ones of several Afghan youths who died during an air engagement in Kapisa province Feb. 8.”

MILITARY LEADERS MISLEADING ABOUT SITUATION IN AFGHANISTAN

"Senior ranking U.S. military leaders have so distorted the truth when communicating with the U.S. Congress and American people in regards to conditions on the ground in Afghanistan that the truth has become unrecognizable." That’s the assessment of a damning new report by Army Lt. Col. Daniel Davis, who returned in October from his second year-long deployment in Afghanistan and says military officials have misled the American public about how poorly the decade-long war is going..."

WAR SUPPLY COST SOARS

"The U.S. is paying six times as much to send war supplies to troops in Afghanistan through alternate routes after Pakistan's punitive decision in November to close border crossings to NATO convoys... it is now costing about $104 million per month to send the supplies through a longer northern route. That is $87 million more per month than when the cargo moved through Pakistan..."

"At the moment, with the cheaper Pakistani routes to Afghanistan cut off by that country’s government... it’s estimated that the cost of resupplying U.S. troops there has risen six-fold... before that route was shut down, a single gallon of fuel for U.S. troops cost at least $400!..."
